Portrait Painting in Oils from a Photograph – Weekend Workshop
All abilities welcome | £190 (up to 10 people)

This step-by-step course is designed to make oil painting approachable and enjoyable. Each day will begin with a short demonstration to guide you through the process, followed by individual support as you create your painting. The course covers:

  • Building a basic palette
  • Using mediums and mastering painting techniques
  • Starting a painting
  • Bringing life and expression to a portrait

The course is ideal for beginners, with opportunities for progression if you’d like to continue.

You are welcome to bring a photograph of your choice to work from, or I can provide one for you. Please let me know your preference beforehand.

If you’re purchasing this workshop as a gift for someone, write “gift” at checkout, and Francesca will be in touch to send you a gift card!

Schedule:

The course runs from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, including two tea breaks and an hour for lunch. You are welcome to bring your own lunch or pop into town, as the studio is conveniently located.

What’s Provided:

  • Oil paints
  • Mediums
  • Easels

What You’ll Need to Bring:

  • Brushes: At least four, suitable for oil painting (my preference: square, long-flat brushes in sizes 0, 2, and 4).
  • Canvas or board: One canvas, approximately 12×16 inches. Please avoid cheap canvases, as they may not hold the paint well. I recommend this option: Jackson’s Art Belle Arti Oil-Primed Extra-Fine Stretched Linen.
  • Palette: A palette for mixing your paints.
  • Optional: iPad/tablet to display your image.

Location:

The workshop will be held at Artery Studios, located under the arches in Worcester:
Arches 28 & 29, Croft Rd, Worcester WR1 3BD

The studio is a 5-minute walk from Foregate Street station. For parking, the cheapest nearby option is Croft Road car park (£3.80/day), just across from The Hive.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Accessibility

We want everyone to feel welcome at The Artery.

Arch 28 is fully step-free and wheelchair accessible, with wide, level access throughout the venue and a large accessible WC. Our spaces are on one level, making it easy to move between the gallery, workshop and studio areas.

We’re happy to accommodate different access needs wherever we can. If you have a question about accessibility, or there’s something you’d like us to arrange before your visit, please get in touch — we’re always happy to help.
