Part of the exhibition ROOTS: A Creative Journey of Discovery Through England’s Heritage Oak Trees

An Introduction to Cyanotypes is an hour-long workshop dedicated to teaching the cyanotype process, a camera-less form of photography invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842 and made popular by the artist and botanist Anna Atkins, who later produced the first photographically illustrated book ‘Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions’ a year later in 1843. As such, the cyanotype is rooted in British photographic history and has long been associated with representations of the natural world.

Led by artists Louise Cromar and Epha J. Roe, we’ll be taking you through the full process – from treating and drying cotton-based surfaces (such as watercolour paper or textiles), through to composing your pictures, exposing them to the sun to develop and later washing, fixing and drying the resulting print. All prints you make will be yours to take home with you.

Held at The Artery Studios in Arch 28, Worcester, the workshop will run amongst the exhibition ROOTS: A Creative Journey of Discovery Through England’s Heritage Oak Trees, a photographic research project by PhD student Epha J. Roe, an exhibition partly comprised of large, A2 cyanotype portraits of trees.

This is a free event to attend, however a donation/pay as you feel box will be available for those who wish to make a contribution.
